On March 24, AIPG Club attended a field trip to Cherokee Ruby and Sapphire Mine near Franklin, NC. The trip consisted of a tour of the mine, discussion on the geology of the area and occurrence of corundum, and testing the newly excavated ore pile with sapphire jig. We also screened the ore in the sluice box and got to keep rubies and sapphire we found. Our AIPG club at GSU jointly coordinated this trip with AIPG Georgia Section, University of Georgia, and Columbus State University, which resulted in a fun trip during which students got to learn, have fun, and meet professional geologists.
